Cone Beam CT Scan

Home → Cone Beam CT Scan

One of the advanced diagnostic tools Evanston Dental Associates utilizes is the Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan, which offers detailed images of your oral and maxillofacial structures. Unlike traditional X-rays that provide a broad view, our localized CBCT captures precise images of specific teeth and the surrounding area, including bone structure, soft tissue and nerves. This enhanced imaging allows us to make more accurate diagnoses and tailor treatment plans specifically to your needs.

When Is a Cone Beam CT Scan Used?

A Cone Beam CT scan is particularly valuable in several scenarios, including:

  • Assessing Tooth Structure and Alignment
  • Evaluating Bone Density and Integrity
  • Planning for Dental Implants
  • Investigating TMJ Disorders
  • Examining Pathology in the Bone

What Does a Cone Beam CT Scan Involve?

The CBCT scan is a straightforward and quick process. You will be positioned in front of the CBCT machine. You may be asked to bite down on a small plastic piece to ensure the correct positioning of your jaws. The machine then captures detailed images as its arm rotates around your head in a 360° motion.

What Will the Results Show?

The Cone Beam CT scan provides a wealth of information that traditional X-rays cannot offer. Your dentist will analyze the images. If necessary, your dentist may also work with a dental radiologist who can interpret results that are of any significance. Here’s what the results will typically reveal:

  • Bone Structure and Density
  • Tooth and Root Positioning
  • Nerve Pathways and Soft Tissue
  • Joint Health
