What is Botox®?

Botox® is the brand name for the protein called botulinum toxin. It is FDA approved as a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles. BOTOX® works by injection- it blocks nerve impulses that trigger wrinkle-causing muscle contractions. A 10 minute procedure smooths wrinkles and softens worry lines.

Why is Dr. Joe Silberman providing Botox® procedures?

There are several great reasons why we, as dentists, use Botox® for our Evanston patients. As part of our dental training, we intensely studied all the muscles of the head and neck area. Dental problems can arise when facial muscles are overactive. For example, when a person is an intense tooth grinder, Botox® can relax the jaw squeezing muscles enough to decrease the intensity of the grinding. With less grinding intensity, there is reduced tooth chipping and breakage, as well as longer lasting and predictable dental work. But some Evanston Dental patients request a BOTOX® procedure for purely cosmetic reasons. I began administering Botox® because my patients asked me to. After seeing how gentle and easy my injections were for their dental treatments, patients felt I would be a “natural” to administer Botox®. My expertise in facial, head and neck musculature allows me to effectively help patients create the smooth and relaxed look they strive to attain.
There are some people who wouldn’t go to a Plastic Surgeon for BOTOX® treatment because of the stigma associated with it. My Evanston Dental patients find it convenient and reliable to have their Botox® treatment done in conjunction with a dental appointment, or on its own.

I’ve been thinking about doing Botox®, but am nervous about it. What should I know about Evanston Dental’s BOTOX® treatment philosophy?

My philosophy pertaining to Botox®, as well as any other cosmetic treatments I do in my office is to provide a natural looking, healthy outcome. My goal is to allow you to be the best you that is possible. Because of this philosophy, I start with the minimum amount of BOTOX® that you need for a natural looking result. Often times, that works out very well. If you should need more, I can always provide you with an additional treatment which will enhance your results. No one should look at your face and think, “where did that person get their Botox®!” Instead, they should see the best, relaxed, renewed and beautiful you.

What can you tell me about the Evanston Dental BOTOX® procedure?

In terms of my technique, I use a very small gauge needle with a very gentle touch. I also use the DentalVibe which makes the process even easier for you. It feels no worse than plucking an eyebrow!

Other than the intended side effect, there are minimal other effects. There can be some slight reddening around the injection sites and there can be some slight bruising. Both of these effects are not long lasting.

Everyone is different, but usually a BOTOX® treatment can last 3 to 4 months. With repeated treatments, the lines and wrinkles often appear less severe over time as the muscles are being trained to relax, so re-treatments can be needed less often.
